THE SUBURRA QUEEN: VALERIA MESSALINA

SizzleC · 10 songs · in production

A ten-song deep house and tech house concept album about Valeria Messalina, the teenage third wife of Emperor Claudius: the Palatine by day, the Suburra by night under the alias Lycisca, the wager, the illegal Bacchanalia, the bigamous wedding, and the execution in the Gardens of Lucullus in AD 48. Every song opens on an ancient Roman sound and drops into a modern club floor at the fifty-second mark.

Palatine Silk (The VIP) cover

[Female Vocal]

[Intro]

Married to the Emperor, heavy is the gold.

Sitting in the palace, doing what I'm told.

[Verse 1]

Tyrian purple dragging on the marble floor,

But a teenage Empress is always wanting more.

Claudius is aging, reading from a scroll,

While the fire of the city is burning in my soul.

I have half the Senate begging at my feet,

But the palace is a prison and I’m looking for the street.

[Pre-Chorus]

The statues are cold. The guards are asleep.

I have a dirty little secret that I’m gonna keep...

[Drop]

I am the Empress! I own the world!

The most dangerous banner that the empire unfurled!

Take off the crown, slip out the back,

Looking for a thrill in the absolute black!

Bored of the senate, bored of the state,

Opening the lock on the heavy iron gate!

[Verse 2]

I walk right past the marble, I leave the gold behind.

I’m looking for the chaos that the aristocracy is blind to.

[Outro]

Kiss the ring.

Shots

  1. #1 · 5 s — Wide view down the length of the Palatine great hall at dawn, from floor level at the entrance. Single continuous take: the camera drifts slowly forward along the black serpent mosaic band toward the empty gilded chair on its dais at the far end. Low morning sun slants from high openings in gold shafts across the honey marble, Tyrian purple hangings hang straight between the columns, bronze tripod lamps unlit. Hushed
  2. #2 · 5 s — Close view of a kithara lyre standing upright on a white marble bench against a Pompeian-red fresco wall in the great hall. A single shaft of low morning sun crosses the gilded arms and gut strings, dust hanging still in the beam. The camera pushes in very slowly toward the strings until the tortoiseshell sound box fills the frame. Polished, precious, silent. Nobody in frame.
  3. #3 · 5 s — Medium view of the Empress seated very upright in the gilded curule chair on the dais, both hands resting flat on the armrests, the gold diadem on her braid. Her eyes rest on the great bronze doors at the far end of the hall; lips together, at rest, jaw set. Morning sun falls across her from the high clerestory, purple silk pooled around the chair legs on the marble. The camera holds still; only her fingers slowly ti
  4. #4 · 5 s — Medium view of the Emperor in profile, seated at a marble reading table in the great hall, the papyrus scroll unrolled and held close toward his own face so the camera sees the back of the papyrus and his eyes moving down it. A bronze oil lamp burns beside a stack of wax tablets. Warm morning light from a colonnade behind him rims his white toga and purple border. The camera holds still; he slowly rolls the scroll on
  5. #5 · 5 s — View from behind and low, at hem height: the Empress walks away from the camera down the centre of the great hall toward the colonnade, heel-to-toe, her back to the lens, the long Tyrian purple train dragging across the honey marble and over the black serpent mosaic. Morning shafts of sun cross her path between the columns. The camera holds still as she recedes; the silk hisses over stone. Slow, ceremonial, resigned.
  6. #6 · 5 s — Medium view of the Praetorian Captain standing at rigid attention beside a marble statue plinth in the palace back corridor, right hand gripping his upright spear, oval shield at his left foot, eyes fixed on the torch in the bronze sconce across the corridor. Grey travertine walls, one torch flame, the black iron gate faintly visible far behind him in the arch. The camera holds still; only the torch flame stirs and h
  7. #7 · 5 s — Very low close view at floor level in the great hall: the Empress's gold-sandalled feet step slowly across the black serpent mosaic band, heel-to-toe, moving left to right across frame, the heavy Tyrian purple silk hem sliding over the tesserae behind her feet. Only her feet and hem are in frame. Morning sun rakes across the marble from the right, picking out the gold thread of the hem. The camera holds still; the si
  8. #8 · 5 s — Medium view in the bedchamber: the Empress stands at the marble table holding the polished bronze hand-mirror up toward her own face, its reflective side toward her and its engraved back toward the camera, so we see her profile and her eyes on the mirror. With her free hand she slowly touches one heavy gold earring. Oil-lamp light from the left, garden-bird fresco in deep red behind her, purple silk on the bed. The c
  9. #9 · 5 s — Wide view across the terraced Gardens of Lucullus in late-afternoon gold: clipped box hedges, dark cypresses, white nymph statues, a round fountain with a thin bronze spout. The Empress is a small distant figure in purple walking toward the camera along the central gravel path, heel-to-toe, the palla catching the wind. The camera holds still. Long shadows, gold haze over the rooftops of Rome beyond the balustrade.
  10. #10 · 5 s — Medium view from beside the marble balustrade: the Empress leans forward on both forearms on the balustrade, her gaze fixed on the tiled rooftops of the Suburra far below in the golden haze, lips together, a slow closed-mouth half-smile. The wind lifts the edge of her purple palla. Low sun from the right gilds her braid and earrings, cypress shadows behind. The camera holds still.
  11. #11 · 5 s — Close view of the Emperor at the marble reading table in the great hall at dusk, the papyrus scroll spread before him, lettered side toward his face. He lifts his right hand and slowly presses his fingers against his closed eyes, weary. A bronze oil lamp is the only light now, warm from below, leaving the columns behind in umber shadow. The camera holds still. Age, duty, fatigue.
  12. #12 · 5 s — Wide view over the balustrade of the Gardens of Lucullus at dusk: the tiled rooftops of Rome stacked down the hill, the Tiber a pale ribbon, hundreds of small hearth and lamp lights scattered unevenly through the Suburra, some bright, some faint, a few windows dark. The sky is ember orange at the horizon and deep blue above. The camera drifts very slowly forward over the balustrade toward the city. No people in frame
  13. #13 · 5 s — Close view of the Empress in the dark bedchamber, seated on the edge of the bed, her face lit only from below by the single flame of the bronze oil lamp on its stand beside her. Her eyes are fixed on the flame, lips together, still. She slowly raises one hand and holds her palm near the heat without touching it. Everything beyond her face falls to deep shadow, a glint of purple silk and gold earring. The camera holds
  14. #14 · 5 s — Wide view of the great hall by torchlight: the Empress seated in the gilded chair on the dais, right hand extended palm-down, the gold signet ring catching the flame. Three Roman senators in white togas with purple borders kneel on the marble at different distances — one grey-bearded, bowed low; one bald and heavy, half-risen on one knee; one young, his head turned toward the columns. No two bodies mirror. Her gaze r
  15. #15 · 5 s — Close view of the Empress's face from slightly below, over the bowed white-togaed shoulder of a kneeling senator in the near foreground, out of focus. Torchlight from the left warms her cheek and the gold diadem; her eyes are fixed on the dark colonnade at the side of the hall, lips together in a slow closed-mouth smirk, chin held high above the bowed head. The camera holds still; only her eyes shift toward the shado
  16. #16 · 5 s — View from inside the dark bedchamber straight at the window: a bronze lattice grille fills the frame, and through its diamond openings the Suburra lies far below, scattered amber lamps and torches in the blue night, uneven and small. Faint lamp glow from inside the room catches the edges of the bronze bars. The camera pushes very slowly toward the grille as if to press against it. No people in frame.
  17. #17 · 5 s — Slow tracking view along the row of white marble statues of past emperors on their plinths in the palace back corridor at night, the camera gliding sideways past each stern stone face in turn. A single torch in its bronze sconce throws hard amber light and long shadows across the grey travertine wall; the marble reads cold and blue on its shadowed sides. No living person in frame. Silent, sepulchral.
  18. #18 · 5 s — Medium view of the Praetorian Captain slumped asleep on the wooden guard's stool beside the black iron gate, his crested helmet tipped forward over his brow, chin on his cuirass, spear leaning against the stone arch, shield flat on the floor. Torchlight from the side gilds the scale armour and the iron bars behind him. The camera holds still; his head sinks a fraction lower in sleep. Eyes closed, lips together.
  19. #19 · 5 s — High view looking down into the bedchamber: the Empress kneels before the open cedar chest, both hands resting on its bronze-fitted lid, her eyes on the folded grey wool cloak and the coarse pale-yellow wig lying inside. Lamplight from the side catches the gold of her diadem and armlet against the plain rough wool. She slowly lifts the wig with one hand by a lock of its hair. The camera holds still.
  20. #20 · 5 s — Close view of the Empress standing before the bronze hand-mirror, its engraved back toward the camera, her profile to the lens, both hands raised to her braid; in one slow continuous motion she lifts the gold diadem clear of her head and holds it in the air before her. The oil lamp is behind her, so the diadem flares gold at its rim while her face falls to half shadow. Lips together, eyes on the diadem. The camera ho
  21. #21 · 5 s — Wide view down a narrow Suburra alley at night, the camera drifting forward over wet black basalt paving. Soot-stained brick insulae lean in on both sides four storeys high, laundry lines crossing the gap, clay amphorae stacked against one wall, a pitch torch burning in an iron bracket beside a tavern door halfway down, a shrine niche with a small guttering lamp. Cold ultramarine sky in the slot above, amber torchlig
  22. #22 · 5 s — Wide low view of the great hall at night lit only by torches in the bronze sconces: the Empress stands alone at the front edge of the dais, feet apart, arms loose at her sides, chin high, purple silk falling straight to the marble, her gaze fixed on the great bronze doors at the far end. The camera pushes slowly toward her along the serpent mosaic. Torch flames throw her shadow long across the columns. Power, stillne
  23. #23 · 5 s — Close view of the Empress's face fronting the camera in the torchlit great hall, one torch flame flaring amber on the right side of her face, the left side in cold shadow, the gold diadem and earrings glinting. Lips together in a slow closed-mouth smirk; her eyes hold the lens then drift to the torch flame at frame right. The camera holds still. Behind her the columns dissolve into black. Seductive, arrogant, entirel
  24. #24 · 5 s — Close view of a white marble portrait bust of the aging Emperor on a porphyry plinth in the great hall at night, torch flame from a bronze sconce raking across the carved brow and slack jaw from the left, the right side of the stone face in deep blue shadow. The camera slowly circles a quarter turn around the bust so the shadow slides across its features. A fold of Tyrian purple hanging behind it. No living person in
  25. #25 · 5 s — Medium-wide view down the palace back corridor at night: the Empress walks straight toward the camera, heel-to-toe, chest forward, the purple palla streaming back from her shoulder, gold armlet flashing as she passes each torch. The row of marble statues slides past on her right. The camera holds still as she grows large in frame, her eyes on the far end of the corridor behind the lens. Lips together. Driving, delibe
  26. #26 · 5 s — Medium view in the dim bedchamber: the Empress in disguise stands beside the open cedar chest, the coarse pale-yellow wig already on, the grey wool cloak already on her shoulders. In one slow continuous motion she raises both hands and draws the deep hood up over the wig until her face is half in its shadow, gold earrings still glinting beneath. The single oil lamp lights her from the left. Her eyes rest on the latti
  27. #27 · 5 s — Close view of the gold diadem lying on a Tyrian purple silk cushion on the marble table of the bedchamber, beside the bronze mirror lying reflective side down, engraved back up. The oil lamp flame on its stand behind wavers slightly, making the garnet and the gold rim flicker. The camera pushes in very slowly toward the diadem. Purple silk and shadow fill the rest of the frame. No person in frame.
  28. #28 · 5 s — Wide view of the palace back corridor at night: the hooded woman in the grey cloak moves away from the camera along the wall of marble statues, heel-to-toe, her back to the lens, one hand trailing the travertine, keeping to the shadow side away from the torch. The black iron gate waits in the arch at the far end. The camera holds still. Cold blue stone, one amber flame, a grey figure sliding between them.
  29. #29 · 5 s — Close view at the black iron gate: the hooded woman's right hand, the gold signet ring on it, grips the ring-bow of the long iron key seated in the heavy lock and turns it slowly a quarter turn. Her grey cloaked shoulder and the edge of the pale wig are in frame at the top. Torchlight from behind her rims the iron bars and the key. The camera holds still. The bolt inside gives with the turn.
  30. #30 · 5 s — Close view of the sleeping Praetorian Captain on his stool beside the gate arch, helmet crest tipped forward, eyes closed, lips together, cheek against his own shoulder, breathing slow and even in deep sleep. Beside him the leaning spear slowly slides a hand's width down the stone and stops. Torchlight from the side on the scale cuirass; the iron bars behind him stand ajar. The camera holds still.
  31. #31 · 5 s — Wide view from inside the corridor toward the open black iron gate in its stone arch: the hooded woman steps through the gap and starts down the steep stone stair beyond, her back to the camera, heel-to-toe, the grey cloak swallowed step by step by the darkness below. Torchlight from behind the camera gilds the iron bars; beyond the arch only cold blue night and a few distant amber lamps of the city. The camera holds
  32. #32 · 5 s — Medium-wide view of the Suburra alley at night: the hooded woman walks away from the camera down the wet basalt paving toward the pitch torch by the tavern door, heel-to-toe, her back to the lens, one hand holding the hood at her cheek. 33. #33 · 5 s — Wide view inside the dim Suburra popina at night. At the stone counter a one-eyed drover in a stained tunic tilts a clay jug so wine falls from its lip down into a cup below. At the near table a bald Roman shakes a dice cup slowly; his companion, a scarred man in a green tunic, sits with his back to the camera. On the far bench a woman in a brown shawl sleeps against the wall; a boy sweeps embers by the hearth. No tw
  34. #34 · 5 s — Medium view of the hooded woman already seated alone at a rough wooden tavern table, a clay cup and the dark wooden dice cup before her. In one slow motion she pushes the grey hood back off the pale-yellow wig with one hand, gold earrings catching the hanging lamp. Her eyes rest on the dice cup at the centre of the table; lips together, a small closed-mouth smile. Hearth embers glow behind her in the dark plaster roo
  35. #35 · 5 s — Medium view across the tavern table of the tavern man seated on the bench, leaning forward on his elbows, his eyes on the dice cup in his right hand. He tips the cup and the three bone dice tumble from it down onto the scarred wooden table between the clay cups. A grin, lips parted. The hanging bronze lamp lights him from above, hearth glow on his bare forearms, dark plaster wall behind. The camera holds still.
  36. #36 · 5 s — Close view across the tavern table: the hooded woman's right hand rests on the wood, the gold signet ring toward the lamp; the tavern man, seated opposite, lowers his head slowly and presses his lips to the ring while his eyes stay on hers. Her face at the frame's edge, hood back, wig pale in the lamplight, a closed-mouth smile. Warm hanging-lamp light from above, hearth embers deep in the dark behind them. The camer
  37. #37 · 4 s — Wide view from the roadside at first grey light: the Roman ox cart rolls left to right across frame along the basalt paving of the Via Ostiensis, the two dun oxen leading, noses pointed down the road they travel, the drover seated on the front plank bench facing forward with the goad in his hand. The hooded woman sits in the cart bed behind him beneath the canvas half-cover, facing forward toward the oxen. Umbrella p

[Female Vocal]

[Intro]

Midnight strikes on the Palatine Hill.

I'm dressing for the hunt, I’m dressing for the kill.

[Verse 1]

I take off the diamonds, I put on the disguise,

A cheap blonde wig to cover up the eyes.

Sneaking past the Praetorians standing at the door,

The Queen of the Empire stepping to the floor.

[Pre-Chorus]

Forget Messalina. Forget the throne.

When I walk into the dark, I am entirely my own.

[Drop]

Call me Lycisca! The Wolf-Girl of Rome!

Leaving the palace, finding my home!

Down to the Suburra, down in the grime,

The Empress of Rome committing a crime!

[Verse 2]

Nobody knows me, nobody cares,

Walking up the dirty stone tavern stairs.

I trade the imperial bed for the mud and the sweat,

A dangerous night that you will never forget!

[Outro]

I am the Wolf.

[Intro]

Down in the slums where the senators hide.

Where the law is a joke and the gladiators ride.

[Verse 1]

Welcome to the Suburra, the belly of the beast,

Where the thieves and the outlaws gather for a feast.

Smoke in the alley, wine in the clay,

This is where the Empress really comes to play.

Fistfights and gamblers, shadows on the wall,

I’m a VIP goddess walking through it all!

[Pre-Chorus]

The emperor thinks I am sleeping in the bed...

But the Wolf-Girl is messing with the empire's head.

[Drop]

Welcome to the underground!

Drink the cheap wine! Let the silver shine!

I got a Roman legion waiting on a sign!

Dancing in the dirt, sweating in the heat,

The untouchable royalty ruling the street!

[Verse 2]

Keep the disguise! Keep up the game!

I am addicted to the danger of the flame!

From the Palatine Hill to the deepest dark pit,

The Empress of Rome doesn't know how to quit!

[Outro]

Rule the street.

The queen of the guild wants to test my might.

A twenty-four hour marathon in the middle of the night.

The craziest story that the empire ever told!

I never back down, I never walk away,

I’m gonna show the professionals exactly how to play!

The doors are locked. The challenge is set.

The biggest damn gamble that you ever met.

Dawn on the Palatine (The Return) cover

[Female Vocal]

[Intro]

The sun is coming up over the Colosseum stone.

Walking up the Palatine Hill, entirely alone.

[Verse 1]

The streets are completely quiet, the city is asleep,

Returning to the castle with a secret I will keep.

My feet are sore, the makeup is a mess,

But I am the winner of the underground test.

I hide the blonde wig in the bottom of the chest,

And climb into the royal bed to finally rest.

[Pre-Chorus]

The Praetorian guard didn't see a single thing...

I am the smartest little bird with a broken wing.

[Drop]

The sun comes up. The empire wakes.

I am the mastermind of all the mistakes.

Claudius rolls over and kisses my hand,

The most innocent Empress in the whole damn land.

[Verse 2]

If the senate only knew, if they only could see,

The beautiful monster that is hiding inside me.

I play the perfect wife in the morning light,

But I own the Suburra in the middle of the night.

[Outro]

The Wolf-Girl sleeps.

The Emperor is away, the palace is mine.

Cover the marble in ivy and wine.

[Verse 1]

It’s the festival of Bacchus, the god of the vine,

I am crossing every single imperial line!

A thousand guests dancing in the garden of gold,

The wildest Roman story that was ever told.

The Praetorian guard are looking the other way,

While the Empress of Rome comes out to play!

[Drop]

Drink the wine! Burn the fire!

Taking the Roman Empire higher and higher!

Lost in the rhythm, lost in the trance,

The absolute danger of the pagan dance!

[Verse 2]

Throwing off the silk, dancing in the heat,

A thousand bare feet stomping to the beat!

This is my kingdom, this is my reign,

Pure hedonism running right through the vein!

Tyrian purple silk hangings between the columns stir very slightly in a draught. Oil lamps on bronze tripods throw amber pools across the veined marble floor; the far bronze doors stand half-open onto deep blue dusk. The camera pushes forward slowly along the marble, the only movement in the

Lips together, a slow closed-mouth smile forming. Her fingers tighten once on the armrest. Amber oil-lamp light from the tripods at each side of the dais, purple silk hanging behind her in shadow. The camera holds still. Regal, poss
  3. #3 · 5 s — Very wide view from a high terrace over the Via Ostiensis at last light: a small column of torches moves away from camera along the straight basalt road toward the distant harbour, the marchers tiny in frame, the torches irregularly spaced with one lagging behind. Umbrella pines black against an indigo sky with a thin band of rose at the horizon. The camera holds still; only the torch column moves, receding. Distant,
  4. #4 · 5 s — Medium-wide view along the colonnade of the throne hall: four palace slaves — olive-skinned Roman, Greek, North African and Syrian, in short undyed tunics — dress the fluted columns with ivy. One on a wooden ladder winds a garland upward, one on the floor unrolls vine from a basket, one steadies the ladder with his back to camera, one carries an armful of ivy away from the lens. Oil-lamp amber on marble, deep shadow
  5. #5 · 4 s — Close view of the gold kantharos standing on a green marble table. A serving man in a plain tunic, seen only from the chest down, tilts a clay amphora above it; the dark red wine falls from the amphora's lip down into the cup's bowl and rises toward the brim. A single oil lamp beside the cup throws warm light across the repoussé vine leaves and makes the wine surface gleam. The camera holds still. Ritual, slow, sacra
  6. #6 · 5 s — Medium view from behind: the Empress stands facing the ivy-wound columns, her back to camera, and lets the gold-embroidered palla slip from her shoulder; the silk slides down her arm and pools on the veined marble at her heels. Bare shoulder and the high braid catching amber lamp light from the side, the rest of her in deep blue shadow. A fine-art figure study in silk and shadow. Camera holds still. Deliberate, unhur
  7. #7 · 5 s — Medium view in the throne-hall colonnade: the Praetorian Captain stands at attention beside a fluted column, crested helmet under his arm, his eyes fixed on the flaming iron torch bracket on the wall across from him, jaw set, lips pressed together. His free hand closes slowly around the pommel of his gladius. Torch flame flickers orange across polished iron lorica; purple silk hangs in shadow behind. The camera holds
  8. #8 · 5 s — Medium-wide view on the top terrace of the Gardens of Lucullus at night: three Roman musicians in white tunics with the great bronze cornu horns curled over their shoulders. The nearest lifts his horn's bell toward the sky; the second, further back, wipes the mouthpiece with his thumb; the third stands turned toward the dark garden below with his horn resting. Gold oil lamps strung between cypresses, torchlight on po
  9. #9 · 4 s — Medium view at the long marble fountain basin in the garden: the Lover already stands at the basin's edge, one hand trailing slowly through the water beneath a bronze nereid spout, his eyes on the water's surface. Reflected gold lamp light moves on his throat and the gold chain. Cypress and hung lamps behind him in soft darkness, torch flame from one side. The camera holds still. Languid, waiting, confident.
  10. #10 · 5 s — Wide view from the foot of the travertine garden stairway: the Empress descends toward camera, heel-to-toe, one hand gathering the purple silk of her stola clear of the steps, her eyes on the fountain basin at the bottom of the frame. Gold oil lamps hang on cords above her, torches on iron stakes flank the stairs, box hedges black at each side. The camera holds still as she comes down. Processional, queenly, slow.
  11. #11 · 5 s — Medium view at the fountain basin, both figures seen from the side: the Empress holds the gold kantharos by its two handles and places it INTO the Lover's open cupped hands, his fingers closing around the bowl as she releases it. Their eyes rest on the cup between them. Torch flame from one side gilds the silk and the bronze nereid spout; the water behind them glitters. The camera holds still. Intimate, conspiratoria
  12. #12 · 5 s — Medium-wide view along a garden terrace: Roman guests of mixed Mediterranean, Greek and North African faces in white, saffron and sea-green tunics and stolas, unevenly spaced among the hedges. 13. #13 · 4 s — Medium-close view: the Freedman Secretary stands half hidden at the edge of a marble column on the garden terrace, one hand flat on the cold stone, his eyes fixed on the lit fountain basin below him in the frame, lips pressed thin. His thumb rubs the closed wax tablet in his other hand. Lamp light catches only one side of his gaunt face; the rest falls into shadow. The camera holds still. Watchful, sour, patient.
  14. #14 · 5 s — Low view up at the terracotta Bacchus mask tied to the top of a wooden pole, its ivy wreath and painted grapes lit from below by torch flame. A reveler in a leopard-skin over his tunic, seen from the chest down at the bottom of frame, carries the pole forward toward camera, the mask swaying gently above the hung gold lamps and black cypress tops. The camera holds still, tilted up. Pagan, ecstatic, ominous.
  15. #15 · 5 s — Medium view from slightly below: the Empress stands at the marble balustrade of the upper terrace, ivy garlands along the rail, and raises the gold kantharos slowly above her head toward the garden below her, her eyes on the torches in the garden at the bottom of frame, lips closed and still for the whole take, chin lifted. Gold lamp light from above, torch flame from below on the silk. The camera holds still. Defian
  16. #16 · 5 s — Very wide view from the top terrace down over the Gardens of Lucullus at night: hundreds of guests fill the stairways and terraces beneath cords of gold lamps, unevenly clustered — dense around the fountain, thin along the hedges, a few stray figures on the far dark stair. A bonfire burns on the middle terrace. One figure near camera stands still, staring at the fire while everyone else drifts. Rome's rooftops black
  17. #17 · 5 s — Medium-wide view across the bonfire on the middle terrace: five dancers in loose silk seen as dark silhouettes against the flames. The nearest woman arches back with her arms lifted; a man beside her stamps slowly, head down; a woman further around the fire spins with her back to the lens; two more sway at half the tempo at the far edge. Fine-art figure study, torch-red and black. Camera holds still.
  18. #18 · 4 s — Medium view at the iron garden gate: the Praetorian Captain stands with his back squarely to the lamp-lit garden, his eyes fixed on the dark empty road beyond the gate bars, crested helmet now on his head, both hands folded on the pommel of his gladius. Behind him, out of focus, gold lamps and firelight. Torch flame on the iron of his lorica from one side. The camera holds still. Deliberate blindness, iron discipline
  19. #19 · 5 s — Close view inside the gilded garden pavilion: the Empress reclines on a purple silk couch, seen from the side, and draws a long gold hairpin slowly out of her high braid; the braid loosens and a dark coil of hair falls over her shoulder. Her eyes rest on the hanging oil lamp above the couch. Warm gold lamp light on olive skin and silk, the pavilion columns in shadow behind. A fine-art figure study. The camera holds s
  20. #20 · 5 s — Medium view in the pavilion, the Lover seated on the edge of the purple silk couch, seen in three-quarter from the side, one hand slowly drawing a length of the silk coverlet through his fingers, his eyes on the silk in his hand, a closed-mouth half smile. Gold lamp light from above, deep shadow behind the pavilion columns, the garden's lamps as soft points of gold beyond. The camera holds still. Slow, sensual, unhur
  21. #21 · 5 s — Medium-close view in the empty throne hall: the Freedman Secretary sits on the lowest step of the dais, the folding wax tablet open toward his face with its wooden back to the lens, and scratches slowly across the wax with the bronze stylus, his eyes on the tablet. A single oil lamp on the marble beside him lights his gaunt cheek from below; the gilded throne looms in shadow above. The camera holds still. Quiet treac
  22. #22 · 5 s — Close view of a green marble bench in the throne hall: a cheap coarse pale-yellow braided wig and a folded plain grey wool cloak lie side by side on the stone, a rope belt coiled beside them, a pair of gold disc earrings set down on the cloak. A single oil lamp's flame beside them guttering, its light sliding across the wool. The camera pushes in very slowly on the wig. Hushed, secret, the turn of the night.
  23. #23 · 5 s — Wide view straight down the narrow Suburra alley at night: soot-black brick insulae leaning in on both sides, pitch torches flaring red-orange in iron brackets at uneven heights, a tavern doorway spilling fire glow at the far end. The alley is empty. The camera rushes forward down the alley toward the tavern door, handheld, fast and low, torch flames streaking past at the edges. Hot, dirty, urgent — a new world.
  24. #24 · 5 s — Medium view: the Empress in disguise walks toward camera down the alley, heel-to-toe, the grey hood up over the pale-yellow wig, bare feet on broken basalt, one hand holding the cloak closed at her throat, her eyes fixed on the fire-lit tavern doorway at the bottom of the frame. Torch flame rakes her from one side in red-orange; the brick behind her falls to black. The camera holds still as she comes. Hungry, reckles
  25. #25 · 4 s — Medium-wide view across the mouth of the alley: the oak plaustrum ox cart rolls across the frame from the shrine-niche side toward the tavern side, the oxen's noses leading, the cart following along its own heading, iron-rimmed wheels grinding over basalt. The carter sits on the front bench facing forward, rope reins in hand. Torchlight from the alley wall flares on the oxen's flanks and the weathered planks. The cam
  26. #26 · 5 s — Close view over a rough wooden tavern table: a scarred Roman gambler's arm enters from the side of frame and throws three bone dice across the bare planks of the table; they skitter past a clay jug and two clay cups, one cup tipped and leaking dark wine into the wood grain. Orange light from the iron brazier flickers across the table; soot-black vault in shadow above. The camera holds still. Low, loud, dangerous.
  27. #27 · 5 s — Medium-close view from the side at the masonry tavern counter: the Empress in disguise, hood pushed back, lifts a clay cup and drinks in one long tilt, her eyes closed, the pale-yellow braids of the wig swinging against her cheek. Wine runs from the corner of her mouth down her chin. Brazier fire glow from below and one rope-hung oil lamp above; clay dolia jars in the counter behind. The camera holds still. Greedy, f
  28. #28 · 5 s — Low view up at a broad-shouldered Roman dancer in a leopard skin wearing the terracotta Bacchus mask, the painted ivy crown and laughing mouth lit from below by the iron brazier's flames, his bare chest sheened with sweat. He rocks slowly from side to side, arms raised toward the soot-black vault. The camera holds still, tilted up. The god has come down into the dirt.
  29. #29 · 4 s — Medium view: the Lover leans against the brick jamb of the tavern doorway, torch flame from the alley behind him outlining his curls in red, his eyes fixed on the masonry counter at the far side of the frame, a slow closed-mouth smile. One hand hooks his thumb in his belt. Brazier fire glow on one side of his face, the rest in shadow. The camera holds still. Hunter's patience.
  30. #30 · 5 s — Medium view from behind: the Empress in disguise stands facing the brazier fire, her back to camera, and lets the grey wool cloak fall from her shoulders to the packed-earth floor, leaving the thin oyster-white linen tunic and bare shoulders, the pale-yellow braids of the wig against her spine. Fire glow outlines her edges from the front, the vault black around her. A fine-art figure study in linen and shadow. Camera
  31. #31 · 5 s — Medium-wide view across the tavern floor around the iron brazier: a dozen Suburra Romans — olive, tan and dark-brown skinned, in sweat-soaked tunics — packed unevenly. A woman near camera rolls her shoulders slowly with her eyes shut; a man behind her stamps fast with his head thrown back; a woman at the far wall grinds against the brick with her back to the lens; an old man sits on a bench clapping off-tempo. No two
  32. #32 · 5 s — Medium view from a three-quarter front angle, slightly high: the Empress in disguise dances alone in the linen tunic beside the brazier, knees bent and apart, chest up, her pelvis tracing a slow horizontal figure-eight, one loop per beat, both arms raised with wrists crossed above the pale-yellow wig, eyes closed. Sweat gleams on her collarbones in the orange fire glow; the vault behind is black. The camera holds sti
  33. #33 · 5 s — Low view at floor level across the packed-earth tavern floor: eight or nine pairs of bare feet — dusty, wine-stained, one with a leather anklet, one bandaged — stamp at staggered moments, never landing together, kicking up dust and splashing a puddle of dark spilt wine near camera. Tunic hems swing above. Orange brazier glow along the floor, black shadow beyond. The camera holds still. Percussive, primal.
  34. #34 · 5 s — Low view from the tavern floor: the Empress in disguise stands atop a rough wooden table, bare feet planted wide among clay cups, and spreads both arms slowly out to her sides, palms up, chin lifted, eyes on the flaking Bacchus fresco on the back wall above her in the frame, lips together in a fierce closed-mouth smile. Brazier fire lights her from below; soot-black vault behind. The camera holds still. A queen of th
  35. #35 · 4 s — Medium-close view in the alley: the Freedman Secretary stands pressed to the tavern's soot-black wall, his eyes fixed on the orange fire glow leaking through the slats of the wooden shutter beside him, one hand gripping the closed wax tablet against his chest. The slatted light stripes his gaunt face; the alley behind him is black with one torch far away. The camera holds still. He has seen enough.
  36. #36 · 5 s — Medium view in the alley: the Praetorian Captain stands beneath a flaring torch bracket, scarlet cloak dark with damp, helmet on, his eyes fixed on the fire-lit tavern doorway at the far edge of the frame, jaw set. His hand tightens slowly on the pommel of his gladius. Torch flame from directly above throws hard orange light down over the iron lorica; the brick around him is black. The camera holds still. 37. #37 · 5 s — Medium view down the alley: in a recessed brick doorway the Empress in disguise and the Lover stand pressed together, seen as near-silhouettes in three-quarter against a torch flaring beyond them, her cloak back over her shoulders, his hand at the small of her back, her forehead resting against his jaw. The torch flame is the only light, outlining the wig and his curls in red-orange. A fine-art figure study in shadow
  38. #38 · 5 s — Wide view from the centre of the Via Ostiensis before dawn: the oak plaustrum ox cart drives FORWARD toward camera along the basalt road, the two dun oxen's noses leading, the cart following straight along its own heading, iron-rimmed wheels turning over the paving. The carter sits on the front bench facing forward, rope reins in hand. Umbrella pines black against an indigo-to-rose sky; the lighthouse fire a point fa
  39. #39 · 5 s — Medium view inside the cart bed, camera low beside the wicker side rail looking forward: the Empress in disguise sits alone on the straw against the rail, the only passenger, seen in three-quarter, hood down, cloak pulled close, hands holding it shut. Ahead of her the carter's back on the bench, and beyond the oxen the lighthouse fire a glowing point at the top of frame, where her eyes rest. The cart rocks gently ove
  40. #40 · 5 s — Wide view along the travertine quay of Ostia at dawn: moored wooden merchant ships with furled square sails and swan-neck sterns, the tall lighthouse tower with its fire still burning against a pale rose sky, the sea flat and pewter-grey. The quay is empty. Gulls wheel far out. The camera drifts slowly along the quay toward the lighthouse. Cold, clean, exposed — the morning after.
  41. #41 · 5 s — Medium view from the side at the quay's edge: the Empress in disguise stands barefoot on the travertine blocks, both hands drawing the grey cloak tight at her chest, her eyes fixed on the rising sun at the far edge of the frame over the flat sea, lips together, unmoving except for the wind lifting the loose pale-yellow braids of the wig. Rose dawn light on one side of her face, the ships behind her in cool shadow. Th
  42. #42 · 5 s — Wide view along the quay at dawn: the Praetorian Captain walks toward camera along the travertine blocks, heel-to-toe, hobnails on stone, scarlet cloak stirring, helmet under his arm, his eyes fixed on the mooring post at the bottom of the frame. Moored ships and the lighthouse behind him in rose light; long cold shadows across the quay. The camera holds still as he comes. Inevitable, measured, unhurried.
  43. #43 · 5 s — Close view on the veined marble floor of the throne hall at morning: the gold kantharos lies tipped on its side, a pool of dark red wine spread from its rim across the marble, a wilted ivy garland trailing beside it. Cold grey daylight from a high window slides across the floor; the dais and throne stand in soft shadow behind. The camera pushes in very slowly on the cup. Silent, spent, the festival over.
  44. #44 · 5 s — Medium view from below the dais in morning light: the Empress sits on the gilded throne in Tyrian purple silk, braid restored, hands folded in her lap, her eyes fixed on the tall bronze doors at the far end of the hall, lips together in a slow unreadable closed-mouth smile. Cold grey daylight from the high windows on the marble, one oil lamp still burning beside the throne. The camera pushes in slowly. Unrepentant, i

[Intro]

The Emperor is in Ostia, building a port.

So I am throwing a wedding in the royal court.

[Verse 1]

I put on the veil, the color of the flame,

I am changing the rules of the entire game!

Signing the contract in the middle of the day,

Giving the Roman Empire completely away!

Gaius Silius, you are my prize,

I see the ambition right behind your eyes.

The senators are watching, shaking in their shoes,

Because whoever wins this, the Senate’s gonna lose!

[Drop]

Marry the lover! Steal the state!

Pushing the boundaries of imperial fate!

Absolute hubris! Absolute pride!

The most dangerous woman to ever be a bride!

[Verse 2]

I have pushed it too far, I have crossed the red line!

But the power and the glory are entirely mine!

Let Claudius hear it! Let Claudius know!

The Wolf-Girl is putting on the ultimate show!

[Female Vocal]

[Intro]

The messenger rides on a sweating black horse.

The empire is changing its fatal course.

[Verse 1]

Narcissus the advisor whispers in his ear,

Telling the Emperor his ultimate fear.

"Your wife is married, your throne is gone!"

The wrath of the Emperor is suddenly drawn.

The Praetorian guard are marching on the gate,

The party is over, it is far too late!

[Drop]

Run for the shadows! Run for the street!

The sound of a thousand Praetorian feet!

The lovers are captured, the party is dead!

The Emperor is calling for the Empress's head!

[Verse 2]

I drop the gold chalice, I run for the door,

The Queen of the Underworld is on the floor!

Gaius is taken, dragged by the chain,

The beautiful empire is going down the drain!

[Intro]

Hiding in the gardens where the statues cry.

Waiting for the soldiers to come watch me die.

[Verse 1]

My mother is with me, holding my hand,

The most powerful woman in the Roman land.

Brought down by the hubris, brought down by the lust,

The purple silk empire turning into dust.

The Tribune steps forward, the iron is cold,

The final chapter of the Wolf-Girl is told.

[Drop]

Close the eyes. Take the strike.

We all go into the darkness alike.

From the Palatine Hill to the Suburra floor,

Messalina is not breathing anymore.

[Verse 2]

A beautiful monster, an underground queen,

The wildest Empress the world has ever seen.

The soldiers march out, the garden is quiet,

The violent end to the beautiful riot.

Erase the memory from the imperial throne.

They smash every statue, they burn every book,

They don’t want the future to even take a look.

They tell the whole empire I never was here,

To scrub out the scandal, to scrub out the fear.

But you cannot erase what is built in the blood,

The Wolf-Girl is waiting right under the mud.

Erase me! I don't give a damn!

I know exactly who the hell I am!

Living a thousand beautiful lives!
